After posting this originally at highlonesome's thread, I realized it was a highjacking and decided to move it to it's own place.
Here's another idea that I wanted to try.
We could have a central common http redirect where we ALL keep our maps and identically named mod folders. I began implementing the infrastructure necessary at the TRC. All server admins would have FTP access to this http location for the sake of uploading maps that they would like to use. I was even trying to make it so that when an admin uploads some maps, he would be able to enter screenshots and other map data into a sort of online catalog. That way, other community admins could see what maps are already on the redirect. Instead of wasting time looking around for custom maps, you could get a look at what maps are already in use by your cohorts and put them in your rotation too.
Mod folders for example, rather than using a name specific to your clan or group, or whatever, we could have specifically named mod folders that we ALL use which indicate the mod and version, so that a mod needs only be downloaded once.
i.e.:
"loolawe"=the LOoL clan's version of AWE4
"loolawe" becomes "trc_loolawe_v1"
"trm"=the Tactical Realism Mod
"trm" becomes "trc_trm_v165"
"awe4"=AWE4 mod
"awe4" becomes "trc_awe4_v12"
"x4"= eXtreme4 mod
"x4" becomes "trc_x4advanced_v1"
"ace"=ACE mod
"ace" becomes "trc_ace_v17"
...I'm sure you all get the idea. This way, once the mod and custom map .iwd files are downloaded ONCE from ONE of our servers, we're good to go on any of the other groups servers that are running that mod and map!
This was another of my most important goals at the TRC, but it necessitates clans really buying into the idea of community, and keeping the over-zealous customizing of mods to a minimum and the renaming of their fs_game folders can't really happen.
Another important purpose to be served by something like this, is making it substantially easier for the community to grow. This service could be invaluable to smaller clans without the bandwidth allowance from their free subdomain hoster (if they're just starting out for example). Not only that, but as explained above, it would save us from duplicating each other's work. Once ONE admin implements a map to the "system", it automatically saves ALL of us from repeating the process of downloading the map, uploading it to the server, the redirect web location, and testing it. If it's done once, it's done.
I realize that uploading the map to your own servers would still be necessary, but at least it would save you the step of uploading to your own http redirect. This would also ensure that we're all using the same map VERSION, mentioned as a potential issue by "baddad53".
Just a thought...
